History

Bike/Walk Central Florida was created by nonprofit Florida Bicycle Association (FBA) in 2010 and staffed with a paid director, as an experiment in immersive local advocacy. Responding to a community need, Bike/Walk Central Florida launched a pedestrian safety pilot in 2011 aimed at reducing pedestrian injuries and deaths.

Goals

The chapter’s goals are:

  • to increase the number of people biking and walking, and
  • create a safer environment for them.

Our focus is threefold:

  • Engineering. Work with local governments and the Florida Department of Transportation  to ensure that Central Florida’s roads are designed for all users, not just motorized vehicles.
  • Education. Reduce bicycle/pedestrian deaths and injuries by encouraging safety and civility and by  raising awareness of traffic laws pertaining to bicyclists and pedestrian.
  • Enforcement. Serve as a resource to local law enforcement, raising awareness of bicycle/pedestrian rights and responsibilities and strengthening ties between law enforcement and bike/ped road users.

When was the last time you saw a bluebird, or stopped to marvel at a wayward pelican perched improbably in a citrus grove more than 50 miles from shore?

When was the last time you smelled orange blossoms or watched a turtle cross the road? When was the last time you took the kids for ice cream – on a bicycle?

Do you even remember how good it feels to hear leaves crunching beneath bike tires, or to walk, holding hands on a hot day, in the cool, damp embrace of a shady oak canopy? When was the last time you took a walk, without an MP3 player? What’s stopping you?

Work? School? Kids? Everyone is so busy these days we can’t even drive across town without calling, eating, texting, applying makeup, watching a movie, hearing a book, or learning a foreign language. Who has time for crosswalks? And yellow means “floor it,” right? We don’t even have time to write down directions. We just plug addresses into our GPSs, and have our cars tell us how to get where we’re going. And woe unto anyone driving the speed limit in the “fast” lane. We spend so much time trying to get to whatever’s “next,” that we lose touch with the “now.” And we call that living.

That’s not sustainable. And it’s certainly not much fun. That’s where we come in. We’re Bike/Walk Central Florida, a not-for-profit dedicated to fun, fitness and sustainable transportation planning in Orange and Seminole counties. We’re moms, dads, aunts, uncles, neighbors, teachers and grandparents working together to make our community more livable and promote civility on our roadways.

Bike/Walk Central Florida is a community-supported nonprofit that promotes bicycle and pedestrian safety, the development and maintenance of recreational trails, and roads designed for all users.

Thanks for coming, and please come back often.
