Pro PEDS in Englewood With Commissioner Ortiz

lakeunderhill 32Dedicated neighbors made it through the torrential downpour to make it to the Englewood Neighborhood Association meeting this month near Azalea Park, where BFF ran into Commissioner Tony Ortiz and Orlando Police Department Officer Eddie Rosado.

BFF had the pleasure of opening the pedestrian safety conversation with concerned citizens and community change makers.  The active crowd made suggestions for new ways to educate new Florida residents on driver yield laws, utilizing TV coverage for maximum outreach, and providing classroom credits for driver’s education classes which includes knowledge of pedestrian safety laws. Lastly, Englewood Neighborhood residents shared their appreciation for the pedestrian islands that were added with the recent construction at S Semoran Blvd and Curry Ford Rd.

Engineering-wise, Commissioner Ortiz has fought for and won approval for new pedestrian enhancements, including in-street signage installed on Lake Underhill Rd, near Palmer Street – a BFF monitored crosswalk.  This was a combined effort from the City of Orlando and FDOT, because Lake Underhill is a state road.  Currently, the City awaits FDOT’s approval for upgrading two additional crosswalks to mimic the Lake Underhill Rd and Palmers Street model.

Thanks to the City of Orlando and FDOT for putting their Best Foot Forward to make this area safer for PEDS.
