Bicyclists Light Up Casselberry at Annual Holiday Ride

Silver bicycle bells were ringing and holiday lights aglow for the 16th Annual New Hope for Kids Holiday Bicycle Ride.  Almost 300 riders adorned their bicycles with brightly colored lights and other holiday decorations before riding through Casselberry neighborhoods.  The spectacle was a good reminder of the importance of being seen on the road, especially as the days are shorter during the holiday season.

The fun adventure was the perfect chance to share some safe bicycling, walking and driving practices and fit helmets to those in need. Bike/Walk Central Florida teamed up with partners at the Florida Department of Transportation’s Alert Today Alive Tomorrow for the event.  In addition to fitting 35 helmets, the partners tested community members’ knowledge of bike/ped safety with “quizzes” for adults who were rewarded with additional safety tips and light-up-arm bands.  Younger riders had a chance to “spin-the-wheel and answer a question” for comic books and candy canes.

The event and ride start/finish took place at South Seminole Middle School in Casselberry.  Proceeds from the ride supported New Hope for Kids.  The non-for-profits’ mission is to support children and families grieving the death of a loved one and to grant wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses in Central Florida.
