Biking through the Holidays

We can’t think of a better way to get in the spirit of the holidays then by going to see Christmas lights with friends. Wait—there is one thing better. Everyone decorating their bikes with Christmas lights, then jumping on and touring the house decorations in the fresh air! And, fortunately, we had the chance to do it right alongside other Orlando bicycle advocates and partners. Last weekend, Bike/Walk Central Florida attended the 12th Annual B3 Café Holiday Lights ride and the New Hope for Kids Holiday Bicycle Ride – two events that hosted over 700 festive cyclists combined. Take a look at this quick recap of all the fun we had – and thank you to everyone who joined us!

12th Annual B3 Café Holiday Lights Ride

The classic holiday song goes “walkin’ in a winter wonderland,” but we think it’s even more fun to cycle! BWCF and hundreds of Central Florida bicyclists joined in on B3 Café’s annual Holiday Lights Ride last Saturday for a festive 5-mile ride. The Audubon Park café owners Jennifer and Darrell Cunningham are active members of the vibrant local cycling community and have grown the event from just a dozen people, to now, more than 400! BWCF fitted and gave away bicycle helmets and educated neighbors on the importance of a proper fit.

New Hope for Kids Holiday Bicycle Ride

Christmas cheer was truly all around on Saturday evening! More than 300 cyclists took to the streets on bikes decked in holiday lights and tinsel during the New Hope for Kids Holiday Bicycle Ride. Participants of the six-mile nighttime bike ride through the Casselberry neighborhoods got to see the lights around their community up close and celebrate the holidays on two wheels. Riders donated $10 to New Hope for Kids to help provide grief counseling services for children after the loss of a loved one. BWCF and partner FDOT’s Alert Today Florida joined in on the fun, providing safety information and fitting new helmets.
