Winners honored at June 13th awards ceremony
ORLANDO—June 13, 2024—Bike/Walk Central Florida (BWCF), a non-profit organization dedicated to making Central Florida a better place to walk, bike, and roll, hosted its second annual Wheel of Achievement Awards. The awards recognize exemplary projects and advocacy efforts that truly go beyond the minimum and have demonstrated real impact in support of those who walk, bike, and roll throughout our communities.
“Our Wheel of Achievement Award winners are truly exceptional, showing a remarkable commitment to making their communities safer and more accessible for everyone who walks and bikes,” said Emily Bush, Executive Director of Bike/Walk Central Florida. “We hope that the people and projects honored this year serve as an example for the community and encourage others to follow in their footsteps to progress Central Florida towards equitable and safe transportation.”
For over 14 years, BWCF has been the go-to resource and apex of the largest local network of urban planners and developers, educators, engineering firms, and advocacy groups. BWCF has deep expertise in making a real impact towards safer streets and roadways for all.
The winners of the 2024 Wheel of Achievement Awards are:

- Winner: City of Orlando
- Project: Corrine Drive Quickbuild Bike Path
- Outstanding Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety Project or Effort: Small (e.g. intersections or less than 1 mile)
- Winner: Florida Department of Transportation District 5
- Project: Silver Star Road Pedestrian Safety
- Outstanding Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety Project or Effort: Large (e.g. greater than 1 mile; multiple cities)
- Winner: WBQ Design & Engineering, Inc
- Project: Shingle Creek Regional Trail Phase 2
- Outstanding Bike/Ped Advocacy Organization
- Winner: Orange Blossom Trail Development Board
- Outstanding Bike/Ped Advocacy Champion
- Winner: Laura Hardwicke, Safe Mobility Manager at the City of Orlando
The event’s keynote address was delivered by Dan Burden. Director of Innovation and Inspiration at Blue Zones and America’s top walkability and bike-ability expert, Burden is a pioneering advocate for sustainable transportation, recognized for his transformative work at the Florida Department of Transportation in the 1980s. His vision and leadership played a key role in shaping Florida’s urban design policies, making it a trailblazer in incorporating complete streets concepts.
