Bicycling in Casselberry just got a little more comfortable. As part of their first “complete streets” project, city officials agreed to re-stripe North Oxford Road with buffered bike lanes. It’s the city’s first street with buffered bike lanes. You can see in the picture, the bike lanes on either side of the road are now protected by a double white line, giving bicyclists a little more room to breathe when cars pass.
The project came about after the City Commission reached consensus to allow 10-ft-wide travel lanes as the new default standard. Since North Oxford Road had 11-ft-wide lanes, Public Works simply added a little paint to the road (the second white line).
…A little paint that can make a big difference when you’re riding an 18-inch-wide bike.

This is just one step in a larger plan to make Casselberry a more bike-friendly city. In the last two years, it’s added wider sidewalks, shared bike lanes, shade trees, sharrows and more.
