Bicycle Dreams

Great night at the Garden Theatre! Thank you to everyone who came out to support Bike/Walk Central Florida at the Central Florida premiere of Bicycle Dreams. We packed the house and were rewarded with a special appearance by Fred Boethling, president of Race Across America and RAAM rider Steven Perezluha. Thanks, as well to all of you who purchased raffle tickets and to Dennis Jones and Winter Garden Wheelworks for donating the raffle items. Finally, thank you to Brian Fallon and the gang at the beautiful Winter Garden Theatre, for being the hosts with the most.

“Sharrows” in North Florida

What are “sharrows,” you ask? Sharrows are markings on the road indicating where bicyclists have the right to ride. Instead of bike lanes, these markings are in the lanes themselves, encouraging cyclists to ride in the streets, increasing safety for cyclists and pedestrians. The implementation of sharrows is new in St. Augustine, which is one of the first places to use this system. It was implemented because on the Bridge of Lions, there isn’t enough room for cyclists and pedestrians on the sidewalk, so cyclists are strongly encouraged to ride in the road.

Next First Friday is Today!

The next First Friday ride is this evening, March 2nd. We will meet at Loch Haven Park at 6pm, and the ride will last until 7:30. This ride is always a blast, so be sure to join us! See you then!

Winter Garden Bikefest!
Join us March 24th for the Winter Garden Bikefest, a cycling festival of with varying levels of challenging rides to meet everyone’s fitness level. Morning Century ride, plus metric century and shorter challenges. Criterion ride for serious racers in the afternoon. It’s supposed to be a big deal, the first of its kind in the town that bikes (and pedestrians) rebuilt — thanks to the West Orange Trail. Visit Winter Garden…you’ll be amazed!

Pedestrian Safety Initiative

Check out our Pedestrian Safety Initiative! Our creative team has been hard at work developing a great look and feel as we prepare for the soft launch our Best Foot Forward for Pedestrian Safety campaign. During the “Fair Warning” phase we’re going to put on a full-court press to make sure everyone in the community is aware that drivers need to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. We’re looking for groups to help spread the message. Please write and let us know if there is a group you think we should reach out to. This pilot program, funded by the Winter Park Health Foundation and MetroPlan Orlando, is just the head of the spear. We won’t stop until, well . . . until drivers do. We know it is possible. Not only do drivers in other markets yield regularly to pedestrians in crosswalks, but other Florida cities, including St. Petersburg and Gainesville have proven it can work right here in the Sunshine State. Come on Central Florida, let’s put our Best Foot Forward.

Unless specifically designated as a trail ride, our rides take place on public streets. Headlights and red rear flashers are required for night rides. Helmets are encouraged, and are required for children under 16.

We observe all traffic laws and traffic signals.

Our rides are typically 10 to 15 miles, roundtrip, and average 10 miles an hour, a comfortable pace for most adults and teens. May be too fast for younger children and adults with health issues.

These rides are social in nature.

For longer, more aggressive group rides, subscribe to Hal Downing’s group ride newsletter by emailing [email protected] .

If you have a social ride you would like us to help promote, please email me at the address below.
