News

Come out and ride with us this evening!

First Friday, August 5th, 6 p.m., departing from Loch Haven Park near the Orlando Museum of Art and the Orlando Science Center.  Wear your helmet – easy does it – this is a slow ride of about 10 – 15 miles.  Great fun for the whole family.  We ride in the street, but not in a storm, so watch the skies.

Stay Out of Hoogerland

Avid cyclist and advocate Hal Downing writes about this year’s Tour de France:  “I will never get out of my mind the scene in Stage 9 when a media car clipped Juan Antonio Flecha and sent Johnnie Hoogerland into a barbed-wire fence -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szSw74rXegw.  That Johnnie not only finished the stage but finished the Tour will seal his place in cycling history.  It also has resulted in his name becoming synonymous with any painful but non-lethal cycling accident.  Go over your handlebars, suffer broken bones or lacerated skin or chipped teeth, whenever you’re in a world-of-hurt, you’re in “Hoogerland.”

Here’s Something Really Different

Velodrome racing!  In what is being billed as the world’s shortest indoor track, -> http://www.firestonelive.net/v1046/admin/files/events/gwp_110115_4391.jpg , the Red Bull Mini Drome will make its first US appearance in Orlando on August 25th. Go here -> http://tinyurl.com/4l5qe46. If you want “in” on the action, sign up quick!  Dan Kinnee at RetroCity says, “Time trial starts at 7:30 pm, race starts at 9 pm.  See you there!  Register for the event here>http://tinyurl.com/3f2u49m.

Unless specifically designated as a trail ride, our rides take place on public streets. Headlights and red rear flashers are required for night rides. Helmets are encouraged, and are required for children under 16.

We observe all traffic laws and traffic signals.

Our rides are typically 10 to 15 miles, roundtrip, and average 10 miles an hour, a comfortable pace for most adults and teens. May be too fast for younger children and adults with health issues.

These rides are social in nature.

For longer, more aggressive group rides, subscribe to Hal Downing’s group ride newsletter by emailing [email protected] .

If you prefer a slow ride bike group, try the Backpack Bikers, on Saturdays at 11 am outside by the bike rack at the 24-hour fitness club by Super Target near the corner of Orange Avenue and Michgan Street in the Crystal Lake Subdivision.  Contact Cynthia Morrison at cmorrison0414@gmail.com .
