February First Friday Ride is Today!

Join Bike/Walk Central Florida and Commute Orlando at 6pm this evening (Friday) at Loch Haven Park for the monthly First Friday ride! We’ll meet up at the south entrance, just off Princeton and head out around 6 p.m. Headlight/taillight required. Helmets strongly encouraged — required for anyone under 18. The weather has been great lately should make for a nice ride. Catch up on the latest gossip – documentaries, film premieres, bike/ped happenings.

Bike Friendly?

Bicycling Magazine is putting together its 2012 list of “Bike Friendly” communities and for the first time anyone can remember, Orlando is on their radar. Whether we make it or not, it’s nice to know that word is getting around. Heaven knows we’re not perfect, but a lot of folks have been working very hard. And with all the cycling activity going on around here, there is certainly a case to be made. Check out this video we put together at Mayor Dyer’s 2011 Bike To Work Day to see the dream in action.

Bicycle Dreams

Put this on your calander! Join Bike/Walk Central Florida at 7 p.m., March 1st, at the Garden Theatre (160 W. Plant St. in Winter Garden, 34787)  for a the Central Florida premiere of Bicycle Dreams, the award-winning documentary chronicling the high drama, tragedy and adrenaline of Race Across America, a phenomenal 10-day sprint across the country by bicycle. This movie is good theater, not just for bicycle junkies, and a portion of the proceeds go to support BWCF.

They are seekers, madmen, and angels hell-bent on riding across America on a bicycle in less than ten days. But what begins as the adventure of a lifetime is transformed in an instant when tragedy strikes the race. These voyagers discover what is truly at stake as they pedal on, praying for the deliverance only the finish line can bring. By journey’s end, some are saved, others are lost, but all learn that the fuel that takes a soul toward its own true destiny is desire.

Tickets to this one-night-only event are $11 in advance, $15 day of show, and may be ordered online at www.imathlete.com/events/bicycledreams.

You can check out the trailer at http://bicycledreamsmovie.com/ Hope to see you there!

Winter Garden Bikefest!
It will be March 24th, with varying levels of challenging rides. Morning Century ride, plus metric century and shorter challenges. Criterion ride for serious racers in the afternoon. It’s supposed to be a big deal, the first of its kind in the town that bikes (and pedestrians) rebuilt — thanks to the West Orange Trail. Visit Winter Garden…you’ll be amazed!

Route Resource
Map your commute! Commute Orlando offers a wealth of information, including maps of quiet routes and favorite shortcuts developed by people who ride their bikes all the time. Check out their collaborative route map here.

Pedestrian Safety Initiative

Our creative team has been hard at work developing a great look and feel as we prepare for the soft launch our Best Foot Forward for Pedestrian Safety campaign. During the “Fair Warning” phase we’re going to put on a full-court press to make sure everyone in the community is aware that drivers need to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. We’re looking for groups to help spread the message. Please write and let us know if there is a group you think we should reach out to. This pilot program, funded by the Winter Park Health Foundation and MetroPlan Orlando, is just the head of the spear. We won’t stop until, well . . . until drivers do. We know it is possible. Not only do drivers in other markets yield regularly to pedestrians in crosswalks, but other Florida cities, including St. Petersburg and Gainesville have proven it can work right here in the Sunshine State. Come on Central Florida, let’s put our Best Foot Forward.
