UCF Installs Bike Repair Stations!
In keeping up with other bike-friendly campuses around the nation (such as Stanford, MIT, and UC Santa Barbara), our very own UCF has installed modern Do-It-Yourself bicycle repair stations around their campus. These stations have tools hanging down that are easily used to repair bikes, but are difficult to steal. Schools with these already in service have had great success and usage, so we expect to see similar results in UCF. Check them out on a ride out to UCF!
Active Transportation is Fun Exercise!
Florida Hospital and the Winter Park Health Foundation have partnered to produce the wonderful Healthy Central Florida initiative. Keri Caffrey traveled all the mapped routes and writes about her experiences here. Be sure to pick up the Guide to Active Fun that includes maps to have your own adventure!
Bike Friendly?
Bicycling Magazine is putting together its 2012 list of “Bike Friendly” communities and Orlando is on their radar! Whether we make it or not, it’s nice to know that word is getting around. We’re not perfect, but a lot of folks have been working very hard. And with all the cycling activity going on around here, there is certainly a case to be made. Check out this video we put together at Mayor Dyer’s 2011 Bike To Work Day to see the dream in action.
Bicycle Dreams
There are only a couple weeks left until the premier of Bicycle Dreams! Join Bike/Walk Central Florida at 7 p.m., March 1st, at the Garden Theatre (160 W. Plant St. in Winter Garden, 34787) for a the Central Florida premiere of Bicycle Dreams, the award-winning documentary chronicling the high drama, tragedy and adrenaline of Race Across America, a phenomenal 10-day sprint across the country by bicycle. This movie is entertaining and not just for bicycle junkies, plus a portion of the proceeds go to support BWCF!
They are seekers, madmen, and angels hell-bent on riding across America on a bicycle in less than ten days. But what begins as the adventure of a lifetime is transformed in an instant when tragedy strikes the race. These voyagers discover what is truly at stake as they pedal on, praying for the deliverance only the finish line can bring. By journey’s end, some are saved, others are lost, but all learn that the fuel that takes a soul toward its own true destiny is desire.Tickets to this one-night-only event are $11 in advance, $15 day of show, and may be ordered online at www.imathlete.com/events/bicycledreams.
You can check out the trailer at http://bicycledreamsmovie.com/ Hope to see you there!
Join us March 24th for the Winter Garden Bikefest, a festival of cycling with varying levels of challenging rides. Morning Century ride, plus metric century and shorter challenges. Criterion ride for serious racers in the afternoon. It’s supposed to be a big deal, the first of its kind in the town that bikes (and pedestrians) rebuilt — thanks to the West Orange Trail. Visit Winter Garden…you’ll be amazed!
Check out our Pedestrian Safety Initiative! Our creative team has been hard at work developing a great look and feel as we prepare for the soft launch our Best Foot Forward for Pedestrian Safety campaign. During the “Fair Warning” phase we’re going to put on a full-court press to make sure everyone in the community is aware that drivers need to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. We’re looking for groups to help spread the message. Please write and let us know if there is a group you think we should reach out to. This pilot program, funded by the Winter Park Health Foundation and MetroPlan Orlando, is just the head of the spear. We won’t stop until, well . . . until drivers do. We know it is possible. Not only do drivers in other markets yield regularly to pedestrians in crosswalks, but other Florida cities, including St. Petersburg and Gainesville have proven it can work right here in the Sunshine State. Come on Central Florida, let’s put our Best Foot Forward.
