FBA’S 2011 LEGISLATIVE AGENDA
The Florida Bicycle Association needs YOU in Tallahassee for the 3rd annual Florida Bike Summit on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at the State Capitol. Help protect the rights of bicyclists to ride safely and freely.
Your support and physical presence sends a much-needed message to our legislators that cycling DOES have a voice worth hearing. Registration is free. All it takes from you is your time and commitment to travel to Tallahassee for the day.
2011 Priorities:
1. Repeal Mandatory Bike Lane Law [316.2065(5)]
2. Anti-texting legislation that make texting a primary offense
3. Enhanced Penalties for violations that cause serious injury or death; collaborate with ABATE (American Bikers Aimed Towards Education) again
4. Bicycle Access to Limited Access Highway Bridges
5. Opposition to efforts to eliminate the Office of Greenways and Trails
For now, please do the following:
1. Save the Date as your day to shine in Tallahassee!
2. Tell your club members, plus two friends, and have them tell two friends, and so on, and so on, and so on.
3. Start a dialogue today with your elected officials in the district. There are many new faces. Introduce yourself and develop a relationship as the local expert on cycling issues.
4. Offer any suggestions or comments to FBA now that will continue the success of the summit.

Cycling Savvy
Cycling Savvy is holding their next weekend class for students on February 4-5, 2011 in Orlando. Cycling Savvy is offered in three 3-hour components: a bike-handling session, a classroom session and an on-road tour. The classroom and bike-handling sessions may be taken individually, the road tour requires the other two as a pre-requisite.
There are no Bike/Walk Central Florida-sponsored rides this week.

The Friends of the Legacy Trail, a Rails to Trail connecting Venice to Sarasota, is holding a recreational ride of 15/35/65 miles on April 3, 2011. Proceeds from this event are dedicated to improvements to the trail. The Tour de Parks info is now on the Friends of the Legacy Trail website. An entry form is available there. Pancake Rides: St. Johns Cycles re-started its Pancake Rides last Sunday. You start from the shop at 1732 Rinehart Road in Sanford at 8:00 a.m. for the 60-mile option or from Valentine Park in Orange City for the 30-mile option and pedal to DeLeon Springs State Park to enjoy breakfast at the Old Sugarmill Restaurant – this is the place where hot griddles sit in the middle of the tables – you’re brought a pitcher of pancake batter and you make your own. Ice Cream Socials: night rides through Downtown Orlando
Unless specifically designated as a trail ride, our rides take place on public streets. Headlights and red rear flashers are required for night rides. Helmets are encouraged, and are required for children under 16.
We observe all traffic laws and traffic signals.
Our rides are typically 10 to 15 miles, roundtrip, and average 10 miles an hour, a comfortable pace for most adults and teens. May be too fast for younger children and adults with health issues.
These rides are social in nature.
