Survive the Drive

The Dori Slosberg Foundation, whose mision is to educate the public about the importance of traffc safety, in cooperation with state and local agencies, has planned a 5-day “Survive the Drive” road safety bicycle tour in April. College students are encouraged to participate by competing to have the most attendees.  The event begins on the campus of UCF on Monday, April 8th with a safety fair from 9am to noon. The tour will be at USF on Monday evening from 5pm to 7pm. Tuesday is hosted by the University of Tampa. On Wednesday, April 10 the tour is at UF and the tour ends in Tallahassee at FSU on Thursday, April 11. To read a story in UCF’s newspaper about last year’s tour, click here. Let’s go Knights!

I am Traffic

There is also registration information for the Feb. 23 and 24th colloquium.

Gran Fondo

The Central Florida Gran Fondo is March 17th. It is part of the Gran Fondo National Championship Series (GFNCS). The series leads riders through country roads with challenging climbs and incredible scenery. The Central Florida ride takes place in Dade City and offers 30, 60 and 100 mile loops. A  New Bike Shop

A Performance Bicycle Store is scheduled open in Winter Park this spring. If that is not exciting enough, they are looking for bicycle enthusiasts, salesmen and mechanics for several positions.  Click here for more information about the shop and job openings. Bike Sebring 12/24!

The Rotary Club of Highlands County & the Highlands Pedalers Bicycle Club are proud to host the Bike Sebring 12 Hour & Ultra cycling RAAM Qualifier, held every February at the internationally famous Sebring International Raceway. It’s this coming weekend, so hurry and register here.

More Tips

It looks so easy; just hop on a bike, put your feet on the pedals and GO! Not quite. A bike should be fitted to the individual rider. Experienced cyclists know instantly if anyone has messed with their seat or handlebars. The smallest deviation from the norm is irritating and intolerable. So, if you are new to cycling, or just got a new bike, here are some tips to get that perfect riding position.  And woe to anyone who messes with it!

Operation Best Foot Forward

Best Foot Forward is a community-wide coalition formed to reduce pedestrian deaths and injuries in Metro Orlando.The five-year initiative is currently focused on Orange County and will expand into Seminole and Osceola counties as resources permit. Five cities, two towns, and Orange County have passed resolutions supporting the initiative. Orlando Police Department, Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Florida Highway Patrol, police agencies in Winter Park, Maitland and Eatonville, and police chiefs from throughout Orange County, have pledged their support to the initiative, launched by Bike/Walk Central Florida and the Florida Bicycle Association, with financial support from the Winter Park Health Foundation, MetroPlan Orlando, Orange County, City of Orlando, Florida Department of Transportation, Orlando Police Department, Orange Cycle, David’s World Cycle, and Track Shack.

When was the last time you saved a life?  Your contributions of $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, or more, can make a big difference.   • Ride With Steve: Beginner ride. Meet at Winter Garden Wheel Works in Downtown Winter Garden, 8 a.m., Saturdays. – Sponsored by Winter Garden Wheel Works  .
  • Sunday Ride in the Hills: Ride 30-plus miles through the hills of Clermont and Minneola, Sundays mornings at 7am, beginning at David’s World Cycle in Winter Garden. Call Ross at 407-654-7071 to confirm.

  • Unless specifically designated as a trail ride, our rides take place on public streets. Headlights and red rear flashers are required for night rides. Helmets are encouraged, and are required by law for children under 16.
  • We observe all traffic laws and traffic signals.
  • Our rides are typically 10 to 15 miles, roundtrip, and average 10 miles an hour, a comfortable pace for most adults and teens. May be too fast for younger children and adults with health issues.
  • These rides are social in nature.
