What does it really mean to walk or ride safely?
At Deltona Middle School, students just got a crash course in navigating their neighborhoods with confidence, and without the crash, through Bike/Walk Kids, a youth-focused program from Bike/Walk Central Florida.

Last month, our team brought the Bike/Walk Kids safety curriculum to Deltona Middle to lead a dynamic safety session for the entire student body, covering everything from helmet fit and brain protection to micromobility manners and Florida road laws. Our team brought the energy (and a life-sized brain infographic) to help students connect the dots between responsible choices and real-life consequences, like how a snug helmet can help protect the parts of your brain that control memory, movement, and personality.
With support from Volusia County Schools, JC’s Bikes & Boards, and funding from the Florida Department of Transportation – District 5, the presentation gave students a chance to explore:

- Helmet Safety & Brain Basics – Students learned how a properly fitted helmet protects different parts of the brain and why that matters in everyday activities like riding a scooter, biking to a friend’s house, or even walking to school.

- Florida’s Pedestrian & Bike Laws – We broke down what the law says about crosswalks, bike lanes, and where (and when) it’s legal to ride.

- Riding with Respect – From passing on the left to signaling turns, we discussed how responsible riding keeps everyone safer, especially in crowded places.
- E-bikes and E-scooters – With more teens riding electric devices, it’s important they understand the speed, safety rules, and risks that come with them.
“I didn’t know e-scooters had rules too. Now I’m going to tell my friends how to ride better.”

This wasn’t your average PE class. Students were engaged with real-world examples and encouraged to ask questions about what they see—and do—on the streets every day. The presentation was part of Bike/Walk Kids’ new middle school-focused curriculum, now rolling out to schools across Central Florida.
Bike Safety Art Poster Contest
Alongside the classroom experience was a Bike Safety Art Poster Contest, where students submitted creative works of art promoting safe biking habits through their own lens. The winning student received a gift card from JC’s Bikes & Boards and will have their artwork featured on the FDOT website. A recognition ceremony was held at the school.

Free Helmet Giveaway
To turn safety lessons into action, select students who indicated a need in a pre-event survey received free helmets, properly fitted on-site by FDOT-certified bike helmet fitters. These giveaways help eliminate barriers to safety and reinforce long-term habits.

Deltona Middle is just the start. This new middle school-focused safety curriculum is rolling out across the region, and we’re looking ahead to even more schools and communities. Our goal? To give students the tools to make smart, safe choices now and build habits that last a lifetime.
