This year, not only did the three winners of the WalkSafe Statewide Poster Contest come from Orange County, they also came from one school: Dommerich Elementary. Safe to say that they’re doing something right when it comes to talking about safe biking and walking.
WalkSafe comes from the University of Miami KiDZ Neuroscience Center and is a three-day curriculum program for public elementary schools to teach their students about the safest ways to navigate the streets and the health benefits to walking regularly.
WalkSafe’s poster contest is put in place to encourage students to utilize the pedestrian safety facts they learned through the WalkSafe program and create posters to promote the program and its lessons.
WalkSafe’s 2017 Statewide Poster Contest had 3 winners in Orange County, all from Dommerich Elementary, Max Griffin (1st grade), Lauren Yohe (3rd grade) and Sydney Young (5th grade). They were recognized at an Orange County Public School board meeting on April 10.
“Dommerich — they just do a fantastic job of getting all of their students involved and their parents involved,” Barbara Giles, program manager of Bike/Walk Central Florida, told the Orange Observer. “They have walking school bus at their school, and are very much behind safety and healthy walking/bicycling lifestyles.”
Congratulations to the Max, Lauren and Sydney for their winning posters, and shout out to all three of you for walking the walk – practicing safe biking and walking every day.
