Why Don’t They Stop? Operation Best Foot Forward

“They never stop for me. Never.”  That’s what our newest BFFer says about trying to cross the street at Pine Hills Rd. & El Trio Way every day. He normally watches 5-10 cars speed by at 45 mph before one driver will stop for him.

During October’s Operation Best Foot Forwardefforts, the extra presence of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office deputies and news crews from WESH 2 and Local 6 reduced his wait time to only 2 cars.

In five hours between Tuesday, October 7 and Thursday, October 9, at various intersections within the City of Orlando and Orange County, the OPS and OCSO stopped 86 drivers for not yielding to pedestrians and handed out 34 citations for $164 each and 3 points on the driver’s license.

This crosswalk crackdown was the tenth high visibility pedestrian enforcement action since the launch of Best Foot Forward in June 2012.  Since then, OPD and OCSO have issued more than 1,829 tickets and given over 3,597 warnings to drivers for failing to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk.

As for our new friend?  He kept thanking Best Foot Forward over and over.
