Students at Tildenville Elementary happily rode home from school May 21 on new bikes after participating in a program called Bikes for Kids.
A Gift For Teaching, a nonprofit organization serving public schools in Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties, and David’s World Cycle gave about 60 students the best summer gift— a bicycle, complete with a helmet and lock.
A bike recycling event was held in January and the two organizations were able to fix up the donated bikes. Tildenville Elementary was chosen for the giveaway by A Gift For Teaching and then selected students from each grade to participate in the event.
Bike/Walk Central Florida came to the event to give a safety presentation before each child was fit for his or her own bike and helmet. Joan Carragher of BWCF explained the importance of being aware of cars, wearing the right size helmet, and being a safe biker rider.
Students explained how they would use their bikes—from riding with siblings after school to riding bike trails during the summer.
BWCF was excited to be a part of this educational and fun event and hopes the students safely enjoy their new bikes!
