Section by section, the Shingle Creek Trail is coming together. When fully constructed, the multi-use trail will span 32 miles through one of Florida’s most traveled urbanized areas. The completed trail will be a key north-south connector in a larger regional trail network that includes the West Orange Trail, South Lake Trail, Cross Seminole Trail, and Seminole Wekiva Trail. The trail crosses through four jurisdictional boundaries – Kissimmee, Osceola County, Orange County, and Orlando. Here are some photos and highlights of recent progress.
City of Kissimmee
The City of Kissimmee is working toward creating an expansive trail system for walkers, bikers, and runners. Part of that plan includes the City’s sections of the Shingle Creek Trail. A few of the most recently completed Kissimmee sections are shared in the photos below.
Orange County to Begin Next Phase of Shingle Creek Trail
March 5, 2021. Construction is about to begin on Orange County’s next section of Shingle Creek Trail! Orange County Parks and Recreation shared the following information about the next phase in its news bulletin.
Shingle Creek Trail – Phase 2 will be 2.844 miles in length, along the west side of John Young Parkway, south from Taft Vineland Road at Central Florida Parkway to Town Loop Boulevard (please see map below or click the web link). Completion is expected in April 2022.
Phase 1 – Segment 1, which opened in January 2019, starts just south of West Sand Lake Road and continues along scenic Shingle Creek to Destination Parkway. This mile-long segment consists of a 14-foot wide path and features a rest area shelter, pre-fabricated benches, bicycle rack and trash receptacle. Phase 1 – Segments 2 and 3 are nearing final design, with construction beginning later in 2021. These two segments will continue the Trail south along Shingle Creek, from Destination Parkway to Central Florida Parkway.
Phase 3 of the Trail is in design; construction funding from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is scheduled for fiscal year 2022. Phase 3, which will be two miles long, will continue the Trail south along South John Young Parkway, from Town Loop Boulevard to the Osceola County line, where it will connect with the Kissimmee portion of Shingle Creek Trail.
The planned Phase 4 of the Orange County Portion of the Trail will connect the existing Pine Hills Trail just north of Alhambra Drive to Orlando’s existing Shingle Creek Trail network; the Orange County segment of this phase is estimated to be 1.25 miles.
When completed, the Orange County portions of the Trail will stretch an estimated 9.3 miles.
