The City of Orlando approved a new dockless ordinance, allowing free-standing bike share systems within the city. The worldwide popularity of bike sharing is only increasing with the invention of dockless bikes. What is a dockless bike? Simply put, it is a bike that does not require a rack.
Orlando’s dockless bike ordinance includes various regulations aimed at keeping pedestrians/cyclists safe and local businesses happy, but at the same time allowing for the introduction of a healthy and sustainable mode of transportation. Bike share companies are required to obtain a permit, pay an $800 application fee, offer 24-hour customer service and provide insurance for cyclists. Users must ride and park responsibly, including not parking on private property, parking spaces or in places that block pedestrian traffic.
The first company to act on the recent approval is Lime. Their fleet hosts electric scooters, electric assist bikes and smart pedal bikes. The electric assist bikes are the only fleet members in Orlando at the moment, but the city is considering the use of electric scooters in the future.
Orlando’s leadership continues to make improvements to prioritize biking. The City of Orlando’s Cassandra Lafser said, “We will continue to explore opportunities like this to further viable, healthy and environmentally sustainable transportation alternatives.” Look out for these new wheels around Orlando!
