Keep Your Resolution to Bike and Walk for Fun and Fitness

We know you may be thinking of dusting off that old bike in the garage and hopping on to lose a few pounds.  And cycling is a great addition to a healthy lifestyle!  Here are some things you need to think about  before you hit the road.

Want to make sure your New Year’s resolution doesn’t fizzle after a few days?  Try these tips to keep your fitness program going strong.

This Week’s Rides

The New Years Day ride on Saturday, January 1st will depart from Orange Cycle (2204 Edgewater Drive, Orlando) at 8:00 a.m. We will, once again, head downtown via Orange Avenue and through Belle Isle to Orlando International Airport and then east to UCF before heading back to Orange Cycle. The route is about 40 miles with an 18 mph pace. A group will assemble and leave from the Bank of America parking lot at the corner of Aloma and Lakemont at 7:30 a.m. to head over together to the ride start. Join us for lunch afterward at Jax at the intersection of Par and Edgewater!  (Novices note speed and distance. This is not a beginner ride!)

Join us Friday evening, January 7th, at 6 p.m. in Loch Haven Park for the First Fridays: Take it to the Streets Ride for Civility.  (This is a social ride at a comfortable pace.)

Walk Leaders Needed

Ice Cream Socials: night rides through Downtown Orlando

Unless specifically designated as a trail ride, our rides take place on public streets. Headlights and red rear flashers are required for night rides. Helmets are encouraged, and are required for children under 16.

We observe all traffic laws and traffic signals.

Our rides are typically 10 to 15 miles, roundtrip, and average 10 miles an hour, a comfortable pace for most adults and teens. May be too fast for younger children and adults with health issues.

These rides are social in nature. For longer, more aggressive group rides, subscribe to Hal Downing’s group ride newsletter by emailing [email protected]

If you have a social ride you would like us to help promote, please email me at the address below.

Cycling Savvy

The January 8th “on-bike” portion of the Cycling Savvy class is full, but you can still sign up for the classroom portion on January 7th.  Learn to ride predictably and visibly, and to communicate clearly with your fellow commuters.
