New FBA Calender!

The Florida Bicycle Association has a new Events Calendar to help you track important events and rides! Check it out here. More events will be added as we find out about them.

Pick Up Your Guide to Active Fun Today!

Florida Hospital and the Winter Park Health Foundation have partnered to produce the wonderful Healthy Central Florida initiative. Part of this is a pamphlet that has all sorts of great ideas for having fun and staying active! Click here to find out more about how to get your own copy.

Respect on the Road

Check out this inspiring story about a man who, despite his shoulder injury, took on the roads on a bike. When he couldn’t use his normal bike because of his shoulder, he switched to a recumbent bike and found that it brought him much more respect on the road, not to mention a great new workout.

Bike Friendly?

Bicycling Magazine is putting together its 2012 list of “Bike Friendly” communities and for the first time anyone can remember, Orlando is on their radar. Whether we make it or not, it’s nice to know that word is getting around. Heaven knows we’re not perfect, but a lot of folks have been working very hard. And with all the cycling activity going on around here, there is certainly a case to be made. Check out this video we put together at Mayor Dyer’s 2011 Bike To Work Day to see the dream in action.

Bicycle Dreams

Join Bike/Walk Central Florida at 7 p.m., March 1st, at the Garden Theatre (160 W. Plant St. in Winter Garden, 34787)  for a the Central Florida premiere of Bicycle Dreams, the award-winning documentary chronicling the high drama, tragedy and adrenaline of Race Across America, a phenomenal 10-day sprint across the country by bicycle. This movie is entertaining and not just for bicycle junkies, plus a portion of the proceeds go to support BWCF!

They are seekers, madmen, and angels hell-bent on riding across America on a bicycle in less than ten days. But what begins as the adventure of a lifetime is transformed in an instant when tragedy strikes the race. These voyagers discover what is truly at stake as they pedal on, praying for the deliverance only the finish line can bring. By journey’s end, some are saved, others are lost, but all learn that the fuel that takes a soul toward its own true destiny is desire.

Tickets to this one-night-only event are $11 in advance, $15 day of show, and may be ordered online at www.imathlete.com/events/bicycledreams.

You can check out the trailer at http://bicycledreamsmovie.com/ Hope to see you there!

Winter Garden Bikefest!
It will be March 24th, with varying levels of challenging rides. Morning Century ride, plus metric century and shorter challenges. Criterion ride for serious racers in the afternoon. It’s supposed to be a big deal, the first of its kind in the town that bikes (and pedestrians) rebuilt — thanks to the West Orange Trail. Visit Winter Garden…you’ll be amazed!

Pedestrian Safety Initiative

Our Pedestrain Safety Initiative has really taken flight! Our creative team has been hard at work developing a great look and feel as we prepare for the soft launch our Best Foot Forward for Pedestrian Safety campaign. During the “Fair Warning” phase we’re going to put on a full-court press to make sure everyone in the community is aware that drivers need to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. We’re looking for groups to help spread the message. Please write and let us know if there is a group you think we should reach out to. This pilot program, funded by the Winter Park Health Foundation and MetroPlan Orlando, is just the head of the spear. We won’t stop until, well . . . until drivers do. We know it is possible. Not only do drivers in other markets yield regularly to pedestrians in crosswalks, but other Florida cities, including St. Petersburg and Gainesville have proven it can work right here in the Sunshine State. Come on Central Florida, let’s put our Best Foot Forward.

We observe all traffic laws and traffic signals.

Our rides are typically 10 to 15 miles, roundtrip, and average 10 miles an hour, a comfortable pace for most adults and teens. May be too fast for younger children and adults with health issues.

These rides are social in nature.

For longer, more aggressive group rides, subscribe to Hal Downing’s group ride newsletter by emailing [email protected] .

If you have a social ride you would like us to help promote, please email me at the address below.
