On July 19, 2024, over 60 urban planners, engineers, and community advocates gathered for a thought-provoking Lunch & Learn titled “Creating Active and Vibrant Communities.” This event, hosted by the FPZA Surfcoast Chapter in collaboration with CNU Orlando took place in the City of Debary and provided a platform for discussing the crucial relationship between land use and transportation. Attendees explored how thoughtful planning can build vibrant communities—or if neglected, result in places marred by fatalities, serious injuries, and a lack of community engagement.
Inspiring Leadership and Visionary Insights
Key voices in urban planning, including Emily Bush, Executive Director of Bike/Walk Central Florida (BWCF), Kathrin Tellez from Fehr & Peers, and Eliza Harris Juliano (BWCF Board member) from Kimley Horn, shared insights into how land use decisions directly impact transportation infrastructure, safety, and overall community vitality. The need to rethink our approach to transportation was emphasized, challenging the audience to shift from the default assumption of driving everywhere to exploring alternative, active modes of transportation.
A major theme discussed was the alignment of land use with transportation planning to create communities that are both functional and lively. Success in active transportation requires more than just physical infrastructure—it demands a cultural shift in how we view mobility. The goal is to make walking, biking, and public transportation viable and attractive options for all community members.
Collaboration as a Driving Force
The event also highlighted the importance of collaboration. The joint efforts of FPZA Surfcoast Chapter and Central Florida Chapter, CNU Orlando, BWCF, Fehr & Peers, Kimley Horn, and the City of Debary demonstrated the power of working together to promote active mobility and enhance the relationship between land use and transportation. By identifying and improving existing transportation networks—particularly through low-cost engineering solutions—communities can significantly enhance public safety and accessibility.
Attendees left the Lunch & Learn with practical strategies and a renewed commitment to creating safer, more vibrant neighborhoods. The event perfectly aligned with BWCF’s mission and its programs like Best Foot Forward (BFF) and Active Transportation Studies, which aim to foster pedestrian and cyclist safety while promoting livable, connected communities.
