Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs has safety on her mind as students head back to school following summer break. This comes as no surprise, as Mayor Jacobs has always been passionate about keeping walkers and bikers safe along county roadways. Her commitment is reflected through Orange County’s Walk-Ride-Thrive pedestrian safety initiative launched several years to focus on street safety for walkers and bikers. It includes funding allocation for sidewalk repairs, regular Road Safety Audit projects, school safety audits and more. Partners helping to get the word out and working in conjunction with Orange County include local transportation partners such as MetroPlan Orlando, local law enforcement, reThink Your Commute, OCPS, SunRail safety teams, Bike/Walk Central Florida, Best Foot Forward and more. It truly takes a traveling village to keep the safety of pedestrians a priority.
What’s even better? In Mayor’s Jacob’s recent Orange County Connect Newsletter, she announced Orange County & the University of Central Florida Police Department will be expanding the Walk-Ride-Thrive! initiative by launching a PSA campaign called: “Eyes Up, Ears Open” – aimed to encourage students to be vigilant when crossing the street and keep headphones out of their ears.
