Orlando Sentinel: County, UCF deal should mean students cross safer roads

The University Blvd./Alafaya Trail area beside the University of Central Florida (UCF) is challenging for people on foot and bikes. With its high speed limits and wide roadway, several people have been killed and more than 200 injured since 2006.

After an extensive pedestrian study that began in 2014, the Orange County Commission and UCF reached a final agreement to invest $9 million in safety improvements, including new mid-block crosswalks, brighter lighting and wider sidewalks.

This is a huge deal for students going to and from campus. But more can be done, as stated by BWCF Executive Director Amanda Day.

“This is definitely a good start,” said Day, who served on the project’s task force. “But, in reality, the only real way to make streets safer is to build them that way in the first place. There is a lot of speeding traffic moving through the area and reducing the speed limit just a few miles per hour can determine the difference between life and death.”
