People On Foot

2.4 billion steps and counting!

Today is the day, people. Get those walking shoes on and start moving!

U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy is challenging everyone to get off the couch and walk and bike as much as they can from now until Oct. 26. The company that makes the Fitbit step tracker also has signed on to help record the effort.

Locally, the folks at Healthy Central Florida were ahead of Murthy with the Walk90 challenge, which runs from Oct.1 to Dec. 29, 2016. The Winter Park based nonprofit promotes walking and biking as ways to improve health.

Like Murthy, Healthy Central Florida welcomed everyone to its 90-day project, encouraging people to walk alone or with a group. “The goal is to get moving,” the agency’s website said.

Murthy’s proposal calls for biking or walking for the next two weeks.

A graduate of Harvard and Yale and a research scientist, Murthy has spent more than 20 years in the field of medicine. His No. 1 prescription:  “Move more.”
