Winter Garden Bike Fest Needs YOU!
Looking for a chance to give back to the cycling community? Winter Garen Bike Fest needs volunteers. The first annual event will include three (3) recreational rides leaving at 7:00 a.m. with options for 30, 60 and 100 miles.  At 11:00 a.m., there will be racing on Winter Garden’s brick streets downtown.  Add to that a big tent sale from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with vendors from all over the U.S. and raffles, this should be BIG fun!  Ride, of course, but help out if you can. Click here to see how you can help.

Speaking of Winter Garden, thanks again, to all who came out for the Central Florida premiere of Bicycle Dreams last Thursday night. Big crowd, and we raised $282 to support Bike/Walk Central Florida. Some of our friends in Winter Park who hadn’t been to Winter Garden recently were surprised to discover the renaissance sparked by the West Orange Trail. Thanks to Dennis Jones and Winter Garden Wheelworks for the raffle items for the Bicycle Dreams event. We look forward to working with you on future endeavors.

Drivers’ Focus

Here is a helpful article on where drivers are looking at intersections. Looking at the diagrams will help you to be more aware of your position within an intersection, and if the tips are taken to heart, will increase your chances of being noticed.

March First Friday

Thanks to all who joined us for the March First Friday Ride last Friday. It was tons of fun and great to see everyone!

Pedestrian Safety Initiative

Our consultants have been hard at work, with Mighk Wilson of MetroPlan Orlando, fine-tuning our list of crosswalks to be targeted in our initial pilot program. Community support is building with great meetings this past week with Lynx and Orlando Health. Headed to Tallahassee next week to meet with the Florida Department of Transportation’s pedestrian safety team. Looking forward to our May launch. Thanks to the Orlando Sentinel and other media for rallying to the cause with coverage of efforts to improve walkability in West Orange. And major props to volunteer Laurie Brown for stepping up to help with our grassroots campaign to take our message into the schools (Anyone out there wanting to help bring WalkSafe to your school shoot me an email at [email protected].

Ice Cream Socials: night rides through Downtown Orlando

Unless specifically designated as a trail ride, our rides take place on public streets. Headlights and red rear flashers are required for night rides. Helmets are encouraged, and are required for children under 16.

We observe all traffic laws and traffic signals.

Our rides are typically 10 to 15 miles, roundtrip, and average 10 miles an hour, a comfortable pace for most adults and teens. May be too fast for younger children and adults with health issues.

These rides are social in nature.

For longer, more aggressive group rides, subscribe to Hal Downing’s group ride newsletter by emailing [email protected] .

If you have a social ride you would like us to help promote, please email me at the address below.
