Winter Garden Bike Fest a success!
Thanks to our amazing volunteers for pitching in to help with the bike valet — John Alexander, Fifi Huang, Judith Jacoby and Julie Bressin. And thanks to all who came out for Bike Fest in Winter Garden this past weekend. What a great event. Kudos to Dennis Jones and the team at Winter Garden Wheel Works for pulling off the monumental undertaking — which included three morning recreational rides and an entire afternoon of criterium racing. Thanks, as well, to the City of Winter Garden, which was in fine form. What a treat to be able to watch serious bicycle racing from a porch swing! Finally, thanks to everyone who stopped by the Bike Valet. We met so many great people and spread the word about Best Foot Forward for Pedestrians and our effort to help Florida Greenways and Trails “Close the Gap” in the proposed Heart of Florida Greenway Loop.
Pedestrian Safety Initiative

Great meeting this week with International Drive Merchants association. Meeting next week with Orange County and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. Working on getting an audience with local Florida Highway Patrol Command. Community engagement campaign is developing nicely. Moving toward a public launch in Mid-May. Today (Friday) we will be meeting with officials from the U.S. Department of Transportation at a White House Community Workshop. We anticipate a follow-up meeting with the Florida Department of Transportation in the next week or so.

Florida’s High Speed Train
Since Governor Scott rejected the high-speed train plans just over a year ago, one company has risen to fulfil the same need. A private company, Florida East Coast Industries Inc., has developed plans for a high-speed train that will run from Miami to Cocoa to Orlando, with connections to Tampa and Jacksonville. The project, named All Aboard Florida, will cost approximately $1 billion. Click here to read more about this train.

First Friday Ride Next Week!

Next Friday, April 6th, is the next First Friday Ride! We will meet at Loch Haven Park and head out at 6pm. The ride is from 6pm-7:30. It’s always a lot of fun. Hope to see you there!

Cycling Savvy Class

The March 23 & 24 weekend course was a success! Thanks to everyone who signed up for it!  Go and register for the April 20 & 21st weekend course before it fills up! Attendees will learn how to drive their bikes safely in the streets and will learn the rules of the road as they apply to bikes. May dates will be posted soon.

Ice Cream Socials: night rides through Downtown Orlando

Unless specifically designated as a trail ride, our rides take place on public streets. Headlights and red rear flashers are required for night rides. Helmets are encouraged, and are required for children under 16.

We observe all traffic laws and traffic signals.

Our rides are typically 10 to 15 miles, roundtrip, and average 10 miles an hour, a comfortable pace for most adults and teens. May be too fast for younger children and adults with health issues.

These rides are social in nature.

For longer, more aggressive group rides, subscribe to Hal Downing’s group ride newsletter by emailing [email protected] .

If you have a social ride you would like us to help promote, please email me at the address below.
