Florida’s 9th Annual Mobility Week: October 25 – November 2, 2024
As Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) gears up for its 9th annual Mobility Week, we at Bike/Walk Central Florida are thrilled to highlight our continued partnership with this statewide initiative. Mobility Week, which runs from October 25 to November 2 this year, is a time to promote safe, multimodal transportation choices. This week-long celebration encourages Floridians to explore how various active travel choices like walking, biking, riding transit, or carpooling reduces traffic congestion and can be excellent alternative travel choices.
Bike 5 Cities: Kicking Off Mobility Week
This year marks the 8th anniversary of our beloved Bike 5 Cities event, and we couldn’t think of a better way to kick off Mobility Week. Since 2020, Bike 5 Cities and Mobility Week have collaborated to create a dynamic and engaging start to this important celebration. Bike 5 Cities is not just a ride; it’s a statement about the future of transportation in Central Florida. This event offers guided group rides of various distances (30-mile, 11-mile, and 5-mile), showcasing the beauty and connectivity of our region’s bike-friendly routes.
Why Start Mobility Week with Bike 5?
- Community Engagement: Bike 5 Cities brings together cyclists of all ages and skill levels, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. It’s an opportunity to meet fellow bike enthusiasts and learn about safe cycling practices.
- Promoting Multimodal Transportation: By participating in Bike 5 Cities, riders contribute to the growing movement towards active transportation. It’s a powerful reminder of how cycling can alleviate traffic congestion.
- Highlighting Safe and Accessible Routes: The event showcases safe and accessible bike routes across five cities in Central Florida, encouraging more people to consider cycling as a viable transportation option.
“Much like Bike 5, Mobility Week has a broader mission that extends well beyond the annual event. It strives to influence both leaders and residents to advocate for improved transportation systems year-round,” says Emily Bush, executive director at Bike/Walk Central Florida. “Cycling is highlighted during Mobility Week as a mode of transportation that can reduce traffic congestion, lower emissions, and improve physical health. This partnership reinforces cycling as an important element of Central Florida’s multimodal transportation landscape.”
“Mobility Week and Bike 5’s collaboration highlights our shared goal to create lasting change in the way people think about and choose transportation,” said Libertad Acosta-Anderson, FDOT District Five’s passenger operations manager. “Together, we aim to empower individuals and communities to embrace safe mobility options, fostering a more vibrant, multimodal future for all.” You can explore this year’s Mobility Week events at www.fdot.gov/projects/mobilityweek/
