A “Wheel-y” Fun Time at Bike-to-Work Day in Orlando and Sanford

It’s Mobility Week in Florida. Mobility Week is an annual collection of outreach events intended to bring attention to safe multimodal transportation choices. From SunRail and LYNX to biking and walking, there are plenty of ways to get from A to B. During Mobility Week, cities, counties, and transportation partner agencies host events to promote transportation choices, highlight transportation achievements, and roll out new initiatives or policies

This year Bike/Walk Central Florida helped kick off Mobility Week with one of our favorite annual events: Bike-to-Work Day in Orlando and Sanford.

20th Annual Bike-to-Work Day in Orlando

More than 225 bicyclists flooded the downtown streets for the 20th Annual Bike-to-Work Day sponsored by Florida Department of Transportation, reThink Your Commute, LYNX, Central Florida Expressway Authority, VHB, HDR, Lime Bikes, Bike Sag, David’s World Cycle, Kyle’s Bike Shop, Retro City Cycles, Velofix, Cycle Bar, Hopper, Bikes Beans & Bordeaux, OUC and more. Bike Walk Central Florida joined Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Orlando City Commissioner Patrick Stuart at Loch Haven Park to fuel up on coffee and snacks and mingle with other riders. At 8 a.m., the riders rolled out of the park onto the Orlando Urban Trail accompanied by the Orlando Police Department Officers and Bike Patrol. One exciting change this year was that the route took participants over the Colonial Pedestrian Bridge and into downtown Orlando on their route to City Hall. Mayor Buddy Dyer offered some closing words on the steps of City Hall and sent the bicyclists on their way. Is there a better way to start the day?

2nd Annual Seminole County Bike-to-Work Day in Sanford

Our day began bright and early, or should we say dark and early, because we got up before the sun for Bike-to-Work Day in Sanford. Riders and law enforcement officials gathered at the Sanford SunRail station at 6 a.m. for a group ride led by reThink Your Commute. Bike/Walk Central Florida brought helmets to fit, but every rider already had their own. After a safety check from Pedal Driven Bicycle Shop in Sanford, the group ride kicked off with a little help from our partners at Seminole County Sheriff’s Office and Sanford Police Department. Officers and deputies provided an escort as bicyclists rode from the SunRail station to the Florida Department of Health in Seminole County Office. It was the perfect way to kick off Mobility Week, and the fun continued in Downtown Orlando.

While Bike-to-Work Day is fun once a year, we think you should try to make every day bike-to-work day.
