According to the Daily Commercial, Lake County roads could become more bicycle and pedestrian friendly in the next 20 years. Yesterday, the Lake-Sumter Metropolitan Planning Organization shared with county commissioners its transportation plan through 2040 with a focus on making streets more bike/ped-friendly.
Shannon Hidalgo, a member of the board of directors of Bike Walk Central Florida, said having roads in Lake County that are accessible to bicyclists and pedestrians is critical on many levels.
This new plan involves making streets and sidewalks around schools and trails more user friendly. Trails such as the Coast-to-Coast Connecter are of the highest priority projects for the Lake-Sumter MPO, along with the Wekiva trail. Roads like the U.S. 301, CR-472, Highway 27, State Road 19, State Road 471 and State Road 46 are among some of the roads considered for bicycle and pedestrian friendly enhancements.
The Lake-Sumter MPO Governing Board will vote on the plan’s final adoption Dec. 9.
