The Town of Oakland Commission has adopted a resolution to approve installing stop signs for vehicles at busy trail crossings in town. That means that drivers approaching the West Orange Trail in Oakland must stop before the trail, giving right-of-way to people walking, jogging, bicycling, etc. along the trail.
When considering the decision, Oakland reviewed trail and vehicular counts and found that trail users have surpassed vehicular traffic in the area. To maintain safety for all, a consultant’s report completed in March recommended that vehicles traveling north and south on Winters Landing Drive, Starr Street, Arrington Street, Tubb Street, Cross Street, Daniels Street, Walker Street, and Nixon Street be required to come to a full stop before crossing the West Orange Trail. Stop signs are already present at Winters Landing and Tubb Street.
Vehicle drivers are urged to continue to use special caution when crossing the trail and be aware that signs will be installed in the coming weeks. Pedestrian and cyclist users are asked to continue to abide by proper trail etiquette.
