Orlando walkers, drivers “Ticked off!”

report-a-streetlight-outageA few days a week, the Orlando Sentinel runs a column full of complaints. Local walkers and drivers don’t hesitate to share their thoughts in this column, named “Ticked Off!” Based on their submissions, here’s something your fellow Central Floridians want you to know: Street lights = visibility = safety.

I’m ticked off that there are so many streets that have gone dark in Lake Mary at night due to the street lights not being on or have burned out and they have not changed them, especially in our golf community where many people like to walk at night. Also many streets in Lake Mary near businesses are going dark. I see malls and stores going dark, with no lights even on inside the businesses. Is this a budget decision or is it they just don’t care about safety?”

Visibility is a huge factor when it comes to pedestrian safety. Broken streetlights can equal tragic accidents. If you notice a streetlight that is out or broken, please contact your local government office. They can get you in touch with the correct department to resolve the issue. If you live in Orlando, you can call 407-423-9018. Orange County residents can dial 3-1-1.
