12 MPOs and TPOs Pass Joint Resolution to Support Florida’s Coast-to-Coast Connector Project

Map Presentation-Coast-to-CoastBicyclists and walkers are one step closer to crossing the state of Florida on two wheels or two feet via the Coast-to-Coast Connector, linking Canaveral National Seashore to St. Petersburg.  Bike/Walk Central Florida attended the July meeting between The Central Florida MPO Alliance (CFMPOA) and the West Central Florida MPO Chairs Coordinating Committee (CCC) where the 12 metropolitan planning organizations and transportation planning organizations, encompassing 17 counties in the Central Florida mega-region, passed a joint resolution to:

  • Support the timely completion of the Coast-to-Cast Connector Project
  • Request the Florida Department of Transportation include $50 million the five-year work program to complete the Coast-to-Coast Connector Project
  • Pledge the cooperation and assistance of the member MPOs and TPOs to aid FDOT, the Florida Department of Environmental Projection Office of Greenways and Trails and other stakeholders in prioritizing, planning and implanting the Coast-to-Coast connector.

The Coast-to-Coast project entails closing the gaps between trail systems that already exist and span from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic across Central Florida.  Although Governor Rick Scott vetoed $50 million for the project, the CFMPO Alliance and CCC is determined to prioritize the project and take the necessary steps to move forward with the Coast-to-Coast Connector project as a mega-regional effort.
