Lisa Portelli, program director for the Winter Park Health Foundation, enjoyed having other commuters bike to work on “Bike to Work Day” May 9.
Portelli, who commutes to work on bike 3 to 4 days a week, rode her bike to the SunRail station from her home in downtown Winter Park and biked to Loch Haven Park after getting off at the Florida Hospital stop.
She described the process of riding the SunRail with a bike as “simple, easy and fun.” Portelli hoped the first-time riders feel encouraged to bike to work more.
“I think the one-time events like the Mayor’s Bike to Work Day provide a wonderful opportunity for people to try biking to work in a supportive group environment,” she said.
Portelli does not want to stop at just a day. She thinks a monthly commitment would increase the number of people biking to work regularly.
“It takes time to make the lifestyle changes necessary to commute by bike,” she said. “It isn’t easy, but it is great!”
