Bikes for Beginners

Do you have a new or used bicycle that you’d like to donate to a worthwhile cause?  Some members of our bicycling family are starting a cycling program at a local Orange County charter school, the Central Florida Leadership Academy.  The school serves middle school students and emphasizes character principles.  Half of the students qualify for free and reduced lunch.  The school is looking for donations of bicycles with gears, in good mechanical condition and suitable for beginning riders.  Additionally, the school also needs helmets, locks and gloves.  Equipment can be dropped off at the school, 427 N. Primrose Drive (just south of Colonial near the Fashion Square and Colonial malls), and is normally open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  The school is a 501(c)(3) organization and can provide a tax receipt upon request.  Call 407-480-2352 or e-mail [email protected] for directions or other information.

Classes

Cycling Savvy

Sadly, in the past week, another cyclist lost his life on a Central Florida road.

Did you know that more than 90 percent of bike crashes are preventable, with proper training?

Do you know how to prevent a crash?

Are you willing to bet your life on it?

Don’t become a bike crash statistic; join the growing number of savvy cyclists who know the difference between “riding” a bike and “driving” a bike. There’s a big difference.

The next Cycling Savvy class will be held November 4th and 5th, and openings are available.
Visit www.cyclingsavvy.org to register. Sign up today. Because the most important piece of safety equipment is you.

Torch Relay November 12th

Rebekah Swyers would like to extend an invitation for everyone to join the Greater Orlando Children’s Miracle Network at the Torch Relay taking place on November 12, 2011 at the Renaissance Orlando at Sea World. The event includes both a 5K and 15 mile walks, performance cycling, and a motorcycle run that all raise money to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Shands Hospital For Children at the University of Florida and Arnold Palmer Medical Center share the funds raised through Greater Orlando Children’s Miracle Network. The support of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals sponsors helps provide life-saving medical equipment, diversionary items, pediatric research and patient education and outreach programs at these two world-class hospitals for children. Any assistance in getting the word out and inviting individuals as well as teams to particpate in the event are greatly appreciated. Please feel free to email [email protected] with any questions.

Ice Cream Socials: night rides through Downtown Orlando

Unless specifically designated as a trail ride, our rides take place on public streets. Headlights and red rear flashers are required for night rides. Helmets are encouraged, and are required for children under 16.

We observe all traffic laws and traffic signals.

Our rides are typically 10 to 15 miles, roundtrip, and average 10 miles an hour, a comfortable pace for most adults and teens. May be too fast for younger children and adults with health issues.

These rides are social in nature.

For longer, more aggressive group rides, subscribe to Hal Downing’s group ride newsletter by emailing [email protected] .

If you prefer a slow ride bike group, try the Backpack Bikers, on Saturdays at 11 am outside by the bike rack at the 24-hour fitness club by Super Target near the corner of Orange Avenue and Michgan Street in the Crystal Lake Subdivision.  Contact Cynthia Morrison at [email protected]

If you have a social ride you would like us to help promote, please email me at the address below.
