GROW AMERICA Act May Add Special Bike & PED Funding

The GROW AMERICA Act is a $478 billion, six-year transportation reauthorization proposal that provides increased and stable funding for our nation’s highways, bridges, transit, and rail systems. This new proposal would require states to use at least 30% of some highway safety grant funds on pedestrian and bicycle safety if the state’s pedestrian and bicycle fatalities exceed 5% of a state’s total crash deaths. If approved, Florida would be on the receiving end of those funds.

The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) criticized the proposal in their recent press release, saying that it is “disheartened that the proposal goes against a data-driven approach to highway safety by earmarking funds for pedestrian and bicycle safety programs.” While agreeing that pedestrian and bicycle safety is important, the GHSA does not believe this is the best approach.
