OCPS pedal pushers tout Bike to School Day

IMG_0088Hundreds of Orange County Public School kids and parents ditched their cars and dusted off their bikes, scooters and walking shoes to celebrate National Bike to School Day on May 6.

Maitland Mayor Dale McDonald joined the crowds atDommerich Elementary School and Maitland Middle School, while Healthy Central Florida greeted student bikers with water bottles and healthy snacks. The media was on deck with reporters from WESH News, WKMG Local 6, News 13 and Orlando Sentinel covering National Bike to School Day.

Kudos to the parents – especially those who haven’t seen their bike in a few years – who set a healthy example for their kids. Fitness level didn’t stop one self-proclaimed “out-of-shape” dad at Cheney Elementary School. He didn’t make it far before he decided to just walk his bike, but he gets an “A” for effort!

At Brookshire Elementary School, students kept crossing guard Penny busy. She helped 59 children cross the street – double the number of kids she usually sees. Kids and parents were showing great pedestrian behavior, stopping and looking both ways before crossing the street and drivers were yielding. Glad to see this.

For the students who didn’t have a bike helmet at Ventura Elementary School, the Orlando Police Department and Orange County Sheriff’s Office teamed up to keep those kids safe, by handing out and fitting students with helmets.
