Best Foot Forward Goes Back to School, learns from the next generation of engineers

BFF visited Mrs. Gordon’s gifted class at St. Mary Magdalene in Maitland last month to talk about today’s pedestrian safety challenges and tomorrow’s planning solutions for walkable communities.  Future engineers and game-changers, these students are entering the Florida Engineering Society’s 20th annual “Project CREATE” competition.

This year’s topic is right up BFF’s alley: Build a model of a community designs for bicyclists and pedestrians, addressing resources such as power, water, waste, transportation and other elements that engineers and planners have to consider.  As part of their research, BFF discussed Florida’s current pedestrian safety crisis and why it has developed.

It was so cool to be back in school and hear the many ideas these students are formulating as they prepare their class project.  To see what they come up with, head to the Amway Center on February 20 for the Engineers’ Week Expo and Project CREATE competition.  Good luck to Mrs. Gordon’s class!
