Late in the fall of 2022, Smart Growth America, a national organization devoted to creating healthy, prosperous, and resilient communities, opened nominations for inspiring Complete Streets Leaders. The nomination aimed to highlight those behind some of the great projects making navigating by any mode of transportation safer for all.
We’re proud to announce that one of the thirteen community leaders announced from across the country is located in Central Florida and even serves on the BWCF Board! Kelly Brock, the Public Works and Utilities Department Director for the City of Casselberry, has worked tirelessly to improve streets in our community for more than 15 years!
One of Dr. Brock’s more significant impacts in the City of Casselberry was his work in implementing Casselberry’s Healthy Community Complete Streets Policy and Design Guidelines, with the purpose of planning, designing, building, and maintaining “a safe, reliable, efficient, integrated and connected multimodal transportation network that will provide access, mobility, safety and connectivity for all users. Complete streets design will promote improved health, economic growth, public safety, recreational opportunity, and social equity throughout the City of Casselberry and will ensure that the safety and convenience of all users of the transportation system are accommodated.”
The Complete Streets Policy, adopted in 2019, has been instrumental in paving the way for projects across the City. Even before the adoption of the policy, the City rolled out its first Complete Street project on North Oxford Road, introducing buffered bike lanes. That same year Casselberry also joined BWCF’s Best Foot Forward for Pedestrian Safety Program alongside Seminole County and neighboring cities, further emphasizing Dr. Brock and the City’s commitment to improving mobility for all.
Projects like those currently underway, such as the Winter Park Drive Complete Street Study, the Lake Kathryn Circle Complete Street Improvements set for completion in 2023, or those already completed on Casselton Drive, will continue to transform the City of Casselberry.
