Join the Friends of Lake Apopka for a Trail Ride on 11/11

On November 11, the Friends of Lake Apopka (FOLA) advocacy group is hosting their annual trail ride around Lake Apopka. The cause? Raising awareness of the restoration of one of Central Florida’s treasures – Lake Apopka.

Did you know that Lake Apopka suffered almost five decades of pollution? The damage this brought to plants and wildlife turned this serene “fishing paradise” into Florida’s most unhealthy large lake. That’s what drove concerned citizens to form FOLA in 1991. Thanks to their hard work and persistence, the once pea-green lake now boasts bluer water and healthier vegetation, but there is still more work to be done. Read more about Lake Apopka’s progress here.

Better yet, you can check out the lake (and support the restoration efforts) during their upcoming trail ride. The good news is that you don’t have to be a pro rider to support the cause because riders of all ages and levels have options. Choose from 8, 16, 32 or 40 miles of mixed-terrain biking, which fall along segments of the West Orange Trail, South Lake Trail and the Lake Apopka Loop.

What a great opportunity to enjoy the cooler weather and  beautiful scenery while also getting your heart pumping and supporting a great cause. Sounds like a win for everyone.

Ready to register?  You can do so here. Hurry – everyone who registers by October 29th will get their t-shirt on the day of the ride.
