While there is a jump in bike to work commuters nationally, our numbers are tiny – more like 500 riders out of the 250,000 population in the city of Orlando.
The positive is that the City of Orlando and Orange County are encouraging biking and walking by installing more sidewalks, painting bike lanes, enforcing driver yield laws, and conducting studies to improve bicycling routes and trails. Check out the proposed bike trail plans and facilities for Orlando. It is still being reviewed, but the time is now to share ideas and input. Just contact Ian Sikonia at the City.
More encouraging news? SunRail officials say the trains now carry more than 150 bikes a day, and that is even before they blow-up I-4 to make way for toll lanes and other major improvements over the next 6 years. Looks like biking to work is gaining not only popularity, but momentum.
