Bike Lanes Required: Cambridge’s New Law

Cambridge, Mass is breaking barriers when it comes to making its city bike-friendly—or rather, it’s building barriers. Recently the Boston-area city became the first in the country to require protected bike lanes on all city streets.

The “Cycling Safety Ordinance” requires city planners to include those protected bike lanes for any streets being upgraded or reconstructed from now on. The ordinance passed unanimously, requiring vertical, physical barriers to protect bicyclists.

Now the advocacy group Cambridge Bike Safety says, they’ll start lobbying the city to increase the pace of construction for streets included in the city’s current bike plan.

Bike/Walk Central Florida is always scouring the country for the latest ideas and innovations in bicycle and pedestrian safety. We think this could be an amazing idea to institute here in Central Florida.
