Orlando Celebrates Completion of the Airport Gap Trail Project

March 3, 2021 — Orlando has closed another gap in the Bicycle Beltway. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, Commissioner Tony Ortiz and Commissioner Robert Stuart welcomed a small group to officially celebrate the completion of the Airport Gap trail project.

“Keeping Orlando moving remains a top priority, and we have added over 370 miles of off-street trails, signed routes and bike lanes,” said Mayor Dyer. “We remain committed to providing safe and comfortable transportation options.”

“This is just another example of a great project in the City of Orlando that Mayor Dyer, Commissioner Stuart and other Orlando Commissioners support to enhance the quality of life of our residents,” said Commissioner Ortiz. “This particular .4 mile gap will also connect with the trail and sidewalk that takes us all the way down to Park of the Americas in addition to the Downtown loop. It’s all about connectivity.”

The Airport Gap Trail Project closes the easternmost gap in the Orlando Bicycle Beltway. This new section features green trail crossings at the intersections, “aviation-themed” art deco bike racks and the first use of the city’s new trail stamp, which will be featured on select future trails. 

Once fully complete in 2024, the Orlando Bicycle Beltway, an 8.5-mile loop trail through and around the Central Business District, will connect the Orlando Urban Trail, Bumby Path, Cady Way Trail, Lake Underhill Path and Gertrude’s Walk.   

The Orlando Bicycle Beltway is one of many projects that further the city’s efforts to expand and enhance transportation options to connect and ensure equitable access to all residents, workers and visitors.
